This leisurely social gathering invites dapper gentlemen and elegant ladies to revel in the golden age of fashion – from the refined silhouettes of the 1920s to the sharp cuts and curves of the 1960s. Think crisp linen suits, silk cravats, day dresses, gloves, brogues, hats, pocket watches, pearls, parasols and poise.
No jeans, no trainers, no exceptions – this is an event for those who dress to impress and take their style as seriously as their conversation.

The Saunter begins beneath the ornate canopy of the Westbourne Arcade, where participants will gather, admire each other’s ensembles and enjoy a gentle introduction.

From there, the group will meander along a curated route featuring the finest cafés, boutiques and independent shops…but the exact route is a closely-guarded secret! All shall be revealed on the day. Just be assured that it will involve a meandering exploration of Westbourne’s very best cafés and eateries.

En route, expect spontaneous photo opportunities, snippets of vintage music and spirited conversations with fellow saunterers.

The Saunter will conclude at the Alum Chine Gardens, where a final toast to elegance may be raised overlooking the sea.

(Should the weather prove inclement on the day, we shall take up residence in one of the area’s many excellent hostelries).

Anyone with a flair for vintage fashion and a love of leisurely strolling is welcome. While there is no fee to attend, participation requires appropriate attire. Styles should reference the 1920s–1960s. This is not a costume party – it is a celebration of sartorial splendour.
Whether you favour Gatsby-era glamour, mid-century refinement or Hollywood chic, this is your chance to step into another era and on to the stylish social stage.

A rag-tag bunch of gentlefolk who stroll the streets from café to café, bringing confused smiles to the local townsfolk and demonstrating the lost art of dressing well to sartorially challenged passers-by in jeans and trainers.

It’s ‘just for the chortle’ but it’s also good to support the local café culture.

The Other Chaps, an eccentric musical duo, pioneers of the ‘chap rock’ sound (spiffing riffery – classic rock and blues in a 1940s ‘chap’ style). “We are The Other Chaps…and we wear cravats!”
